Tot School - Letter A - Apples

Little M worked on the Letter A this past week and learned all about apples.

We read The Apple Pie Tree by Linda Rose as our spine book.  The book was an interesting way to begin a conversation about the life cycle of the apple tree and the changing of seasons.  It took a few readings for Little M to "get" that the seasons were changing in the story but once he got it he was so excited that he just had to explain it all to Ms. Q.  Being the good big sister she is, she pretended that she had no idea about this and let him show her the pictures and give his explanation.

He completed a lapbook (he really loves lapbooks).   He learned what the letter A sounds like and some words that start with the letter A.  He also learned about the life cycle of an apple tree, practiced size order, and counted apples growing on an apple tree.

We also read some more books about apples:

These are some of the books I selected from the public library on last week's visit.  I usually get more than we will actually read for "school" but that way Little M can pick which ones he wants to read and there will be some around for free time reading as well.  In Charlotte Mason style I don't worry whether Little M will understand the whole book, especially some of the more advanced non-fiction titles.  He usually picks up something here or there and that's perfectly fine.  Better than fine really, more like just right!

The big surprise for him this week - we made an apple pie! There is a recipe in the back of the Apple Pie Tree book for apple pie.  I do alot of baking and have made a few pies, but I always cheat and buy the pie crust.  This time we made the crust.  We followed the recipe and it came out great.  He did most of the work himself, I supervised and measured mostly.  He was so excited.
